Year 4 Set Sail as Viking Explorers

Year 4 stepped back over a thousand years this week as part of their history topic on the Vikings. The classroom turned into a longship for the morning, with the children learning to row in perfect time together, just like a real Viking crew would have needed to.
From there it was straight into writing, but not as anyone knows it. The children wrote their names and secret messages using Old Norse runes, working out how Vikings would have written before the alphabet we use today existed.
The day rounded off with Viking sagas and a song about some of the key Viking gods, giving Year 4 a real feel for the stories Vikings told each other long before they were ever written down. A brilliant way to bring a history topic to life.
