500 Words House Competition Launch!

Today’s assembly was an opportunity to properly introduce our House Captains and talk a little about their plans for the term ahead. They shared that the first House competition was almost completed and the harvest food collections would be taken to the foodbank next week. Thank you to all who have supported with this.

They went on to introduce the next competition for the children. The BBC 500 Word Challenge. The basic premise is to “Write a story you would love to read”. BBC’s 500 Words is the UK’s largest children’s writing competition for children aged 5-11, and it is open for entries now!

However, to encourage more participation in this national writing competition, the house captains are asking for anyone entering to also hand in a copy of their story to their class teacher and we will judge it in school in our very own NHPS 500 Words competition. All entries will receive house points for taking part, with year group winners selected to receive an additional prize!

All entries to both ours, and the BBC’s competitions need to be submitted by Friday 8th November, so this is a great challenge for children to take on over the half term break. As I said to the children, every one of them have a story in them to share, although some of them may need some support in writing it down.

We are not judging grammar, spellings or punctuation; instead it is about the imagination and inventiveness that the children demonstrate within their stories. All the rules are explained on the 500 Words website. The stories will need to be typed and printed out to be handed in. Alternatively, if you want to email them in to enquiries@nhps.thlt.academy, then please include the child’s name, class and house team along with the subject: 500 Words.
