‘Be the Change you Want to See in the World’

Today’s assembly we learned about Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was born on 2nd October 1869.

Later in life he was known as ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi which translates as ‘Great Soul’.

We learned a little about his early life in India, before moving to the UK to study law at university. Did you know that he spent a large part of his adulthood living in South Africa and saw first-hand the inequalities and racism whilst living there?

When he eventually returned to India, he started a political movement called the Natal Indian Congress, and he strongly believed in non-violent political protests. Many Indian people saw him as a voice for freedom and fairness against colonial rule and his ability to stand up against inequality allowed significant changes to take place in India, resulting in eventual independence from Britain.

He is an inspiration for many things throughout his life, but his words resonate as much now as when he spoke them all those years ago:

“It’s easy to stand in the crowd but it takes courage to stand alone.”

“Our greatest ability as humans is not to change the world, but to change ourselves.”

‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’
