D-Day Assembly
This morning’s assembly focused on the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
We went through some of the key moments of World War II and how this day is widely regarded as the beginning of the end of the conflict.
After almost 5 years of war across Europe and around the word, the allied forces launched the biggest invasion force the world has ever seen!
We shared that the planning of this took a very long time, and found out that it was meant to be 5th June, but poor weather delayed the invasion by a day. Interestingly the ‘D’ in D-Day stands for ‘Day!’
What was particularly impressive was how the Allies managed to keep the details of this plan secret from the Axis forces, and this was thanks in part to the work the people of Bletchley Park were doing, sending out false information that they knew would be intercepted.
Despite the overall success of the invasion itself, as we all know it came with a collossal loss of life on all sides.
We ended with an image of the British War Memorial in Normandy that was finished in 2021. I set the children a challenge, asking them if they could research a little about this and feed back to me what they learn.
